On March 19, the Lahore High Court (LHC) resumed hearing a 2015 petition seeking a ban on broadcasting Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) founder Altaf Hussain’s speeches and images. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Aalia Neelum and including Justices Farooq Haider and Tariq Nadeem issued notices to respondents and summoned the Attorney General for Pakistan and the Punjab advocate general in the next hearing and sought their assistance.
The petition, filed by Advocate Aftab Virk, Abdullah Malik, and others, calls for a permanent ban, citing Hussain’s alleged anti-army remarks. The court had imposed the restriction on August 31, 2015.
During the proceedings, petitioner Abdullah Malik remarked that “peace had been established in Karachi” following the 2015 ban. Chief Justice Neelum noted: “This is an important matter for our country’s peace, which is why we have issued notices to all respondents and petitioners.”
The court allowed the petitioners time to appoint legal representation and directed Hussain’s lawyer to be summoned in the next session. The bench then adjourned proceedings until April 27.
