SINGAPORE, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Only one in four Singapore residents could distinguish between deepfake and legitimate videos when tested, even though 78 percent said they were confident in doing so, according to the Cybersecurity Public Awareness Survey 2024 released on Wednesday.
The nationwide survey, conducted by the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA), polled 1,050 respondents aged 15 and above. It found that about six in 10 were aware of deepfakes, and more than one in four had encountered deepfake scams.
In a press release, the CSA noted the growing prevalence of deepfakes in the digital space and their potential misuse in scams.
The survey also revealed that over half of the respondents believed their devices were likely to be compromised by viruses or malware, a slight decline from 60 percent in 2022. About three in 10 reported falling victim to at least one cyber incident.
Awareness of phishing has improved, with 80 percent of respondents indicating they understand what phishing is, up from 72 percent in 2022.
The CSA announced that it will launch its sixth National Cybersecurity Campaign in September. Drawing on insights from the 2024 survey, the campaign will emphasize essential practices such as installing security apps and regularly updating software.
