SYDNEY, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Three people have been killed in a collision of five vehicles on a major highway northwest of Melbourne, Australia.
Police in Australia's state of Victoria said in a statement on Wednesday that two cars, a truck towing two semi-trailers and two smaller trucks were involved in a collision on a highway near the town of Armstrong, about 195 kilometers northwest of Melbourne, around 12:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday.
The driver of one of the cars and two occupants of one of the trucks, none of whom have yet been formally identified, were declared deceased at the scene.
The driver of the second car was taken to the hospital as a precaution, police said.
Detectives from the major collision unit are investigating the circumstances of the collision.
The highway has been closed in both directions and motorists have been told to take a 20-kilometer detour, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
